PROGRAMME BREAKDOWN

BROWSE THE TABS FOR MORE INFORMATION

Pagoda will host a virtual pre-departure event where participants will have the chance to have their questions answered. A recording of the event will be provided to those unable to attend.

Accredited by the Manchester-based Carbon Literacy Project, participants will receive Carbon Literacy Training and an official certificate upon completion.

Carbon Literacy is defined as “an awareness of the carbon dioxide costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.”

The training, developed by the Carbon Literacy Project, is globally unique and was recognised as such by the UN at COP21, where it was awarded as a TAP100, one of 100 Worldwide Transformative Action Programs. It has been implemented by more than 1700 organisations worldwide, including the NHS, the BBC, and the Machester City Council.

By incorporating Carbon Literacy Training into this programme, we aim to equip students with a solid educational foundation and understanding of the importance of adopting a carbon-conscious lifestyle.

  • 5-night field trip to Brussels, giving participants hands-on industry experience in a global context
  • Introduction to a carbon-conscious culture
  • Any carbon generated will be offset 150% through Gold Standard offsetting projects

According to the International Energy Alliance’s (IEA) 2020 Tracking Transport Report, ships, planes and road-vehicles make up almost three-quarters of global transport emissions.

Urban and high-speed trains are one of the most sustainable, long-distance transport methods. Eurostar’s high-speed trains are the most carbon-efficient option when travelling between London and neighbouring European cities.

On average, travelling on the Eurostar emits 10 times less carbon per passenger compared to a short-haul flight to the same destination.

In line with the programme’s core ethos, transportation during the programme is exclusively via public transport and walking.

To reflect the programme’s core ethos, participants will stay at high-quality hostels, which both support and demonstrate sustainable and environmental practices.

Hostels are situated in, or are in close proximity to the city centre, with excellent public transport links.

In addition to the other programme components, Pagoda will arrange for students to take part in guided tours around the best attractions the city has to offer.

All entrance fees are covered as part of the programme and the group will be fully supported and supervised throughout the activity by a friendly member of the Pagoda staff.

Participants will have their evenings free throughout the programme to explore the city and bond with their fellow teammates. A Digital Welcome Pack of the city’s (arguably) best sustainable attractions, shops and restaurants will be provided.

Pagoda’s app is built for communities and allows users to engage, share and communicate with each other whilst maintaining a high level of privacy.

Communication

Maintain communication with Pagoda before, during, and after the programme.

THE COURSES

What are the skills courses?

Pagoda Projects have developed a series of skills courses set to encourage the development of your skillsets with a focus on ‘work readiness’ in a post-pandemic business world.

The Skills series includes courses focusing on Intercultural Fluency, Employability, Digital Competency and Workplace Basics. This framework provides the learner with the agility needed for a globalised and ever-changing workplace, preparing you with the knowledge to communicate effectively within an international team, approach the job-market with confidence and have a strong understanding of the importance of ‘digital’ technologies.

As qualifications remain a vital measure of achievement, a certificate is awarded to you following each completed course.

Why are they important?

Based on the Universities UK – Higher Education in England: Provision, Skills and Graduates Survey, ‘for both graduates of all levels and subject areas, skills and competencies came first (82.4% reported this to be a formal or important requirement), followed by relevant work experience (66.7%)’ when asked what mattered most when entering the labour market and attaining a job. Similarly, 87% of employers listed attitudes and aptitudes for work more important than relevant work experience, degree result and degree subject when hiring a graduate.

This coherence between student and employer views supports our framework in being able to provide learners with accessible skills courses that can be integrated into professional internships; this will allow you to achieve the most important attributes considered by employers.

EVENTS

DURING THE PROGRAMME WE WILL BE HOSTING LOTS OF EVENTS TO IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS & GAIN EXPERIENCE

THE COURSES

What are the skills courses?

Pagoda Projects have developed a series of skills courses set to encourage the development of student and recent graduate’ current skillset with the fundamental elements needed to improve their ‘work readiness’ for a post-pandemic business world.

The skills series includes courses focusing on Intercultural Fluency, Employability and Digital Competency. We believe this framework provides the learner with the agility needed for a global and ever-changing workplace, preparing them with the knowledge to communicate effectively within an international work-group or team, tackle the job market with awareness, preparation and confidence and have a strong understanding of the importance of ‘digital’ once they enter the workplace.

As qualifications remain a vital measure of achievement, a certificate is provided following each completed course.

This coherence between student and employer views supports our framework in being able to provide learners with accessible skills courses that can be integrated into professional internships; this would allow them to achieve both the first and second most important values when attaining employment. For non-placement learners, these courses may be integrated into course projects or their own self-development actions, allowing the learner to practice their new skills in real-time.

‘In addition to the Programme offered by Pagoda, Leeds Beckett will require programme applicants to take part in a shortlisting exercise on 6th March at our City Campus, should they be eligible to participate in the programme. This exercise will involve some assessment centre tasks, such as group work and a short presentation, followed by a short interview. This will enable us to select the 15 programme participants, plus some reserves, so attendance is mandatory for any student wishing to be considered to take part in the programme. Once students have completed Carbon Literacy Training and returned from Brussels, they will be expected to contribute to Leeds Beckett’s work to grow sustainability education, by delivering Carbon Literacy Training to LBU students and staff, as well as to local businesses and community groups. This ensures the ongoing legacy of the programme and supports sustainability awareness, both in the Leeds Beckett community and within communities in the surrounding area.
