WHAT ARE THE ACEN EQUITY SCHOLARSHIPS?
ACEN have partnered with Pagoda Projects to offer 7 Global Online Internships which enable eligible students from equity groups to access a diverse range of work-integrated learning (WIL) experiences. The Scholarship program is part of ACENās mission to promote quality and inclusive WIL for all in collaboration with industry partners.
The ACEN Equity Scholarship is valued at $2,400.00 AUD per student (a total of $16,800) and consists of:
- A full or part-time Global Online Internship in one of Pagodaās world-wide host locations
- Dedicated English-speaking internship supervisor
- Individually matched Cultural Mentor from the host location
- Regular online events with guest speakers and subject matter experts
- Four (4) courses for work-readiness and intercultural fluency
- Full support from the Pagoda team; training and coaching where required
- Access to Pagodaās online portal
- Access to the Pagoda Alumni Network

Which academic disciplines have internships?
You can access an internship in: Business; Sales & Marketing; IT and Technology; Engineering; Finance; Accounting; Trade; Logistics; Design; Architecture; Media; Health; and Sport. If your academic discipline is not on the list, please use the Pagoda contact at the bottom of this page to check current availability.
If I receive the scholarship, when do I start and finish the program, and what is the process for placing me with an organisation?
Students must be available to begin the internship placement on a full or part-time basis from 19th February 2024. The internship runs for 8-16 weeks and must end by 7th June 2024.
If you are awarded a scholarship, one of the Pagoda team will be in touch to discuss available internship opportunities with you. They can suggest options based on your interests, goals, and requirements. Alternatively, you are free to browse the examples on the scholarship page at any time.
Once you have been accepted for your preferred position, Pagoda will introduce you to your company supervisor, provide all onboarding instructions, and make sure youāre ready for your program.
How many hours will I be expected to work?
You can let us know your preferred duration of internship, from eight to sixteen weeks, however, the number of hours you will be expected to contribute to your host organisation each week will likely vary depending on the total duration you will be able to commit to.
Approximate expectations in terms of duration and number of hours are as follows:
- 8 to 10 weeksā 20 ā 40 hours per week
- 11 to 16 weeks – 10 hours or more per week

Your university determines your eligibility to receive credit towards your degree for participating in the internship. It is your responsibility to contact your university and enquire about your eligibility to receive credit. To assist with your enquiries, you can provide the university with details about the virtual internship with Pagoda Projects.
You must inform Pagoda Projects if you are expecting to receive credit for this program.
The scholarship is open to both undergraduate and post graduate students, including international students. To be eligible to apply for an ACEN Equity Scholarship, you must:
1. Be enrolled in a tertiary degree with a current ACEN member institution at the time of starting the Pagoda Projects virtual internship program. Students must produce a copy of their academic transcript to Pagoda Projects on request;
2. Be available to begin the online internship from 19th February 2024.
3. Be a member of at least ONE of the following equity groups:
- Students who have a long-term medical condition or disability which impacts their study.
- Students who can demonstrate financial disadvantage, through receipt of Youth Allowance or other means-tested Commonwealth support.
- Students who have relocated or will be relocating from interstate or a regional area to study at university.
- Students who are current or former refugees.
- Students who identify as LGBTQI+.
- Aboriginal and Torres strait islander students and who are identified as such by their community.
- Students who are the first in their immediate family (partner, parent, grandparent, children, siblings) to attend university.
4. Be able to prepare a 3-5 minute pre-recorded interview according to the instructions available here.
5. Be available to attend an online interview if required.
6. Provide a recorded testimonial video and other content relating to your programme
Students will be short-listed for an interview based on the quality of their responses to the following prompts in their pre-recorded video:
- Tell us about any previous work experience you have and the skills you have that make you a good candidate for this programme.
- How do you think this experience will benefit your future career?
- What type of internship role are you looking for, what responsibilities are you expecting to have in place and what skills are you looking to practice during the remote internship?
- If successful, what potential challenges do you think you could face during your remote internship?
- Why do you think you should be awarded the scholarship?
A copy of the criteria used to evaluate student responses is available here .
Shortlisted candidates may be required to join a live interview to discuss suitability and clarify certain elements of their application. These will be conducted online and at a mutually agreed time.
The decision to short list students for an interview and the awarding of the ACEN Equity Scholarship is made collaboratively between ACEN and Pagoda. The decision is final and there is no right of review or appeal.
Successful recipients will be required to provide written and video testimonials of their experiences as part of this program. These will be used for promotion of the program components and scholarship outcomes. By applying, you are committing to your availability for the program dates, and understand that you will be required to provide content relating to your experience on request.

THE COURSES
What are the skills courses?
Our courses focus on Employability, Digital Competency and Intercultural Fluency. We believe this framework will provide you with the agility needed for a global and ever-changing workplace. Weāll give you the aptitude to communicate effectively within an international work-group or team so you can tackle the job market with awareness, preparation and conļ¬dence. Youāll also have an amazing understanding of ādigitalā for once youāve gained employment.
As qualiļ¬cations have become a signiļ¬cant measure in terms of employability, each course provides a certiļ¬cate of completion to show in your job applications.
Why are they important?
On a survey conducted by Universities UK which asked about whatās most important for getting a job, the survey showed that āfor both graduates of all levels and subject areas, skills and competencies came ļ¬rst (82.4% reported this to be a formal or important requirement), followed by relevant work experience (66.7%)ā. Similarly, 87% of employers listed attitudes and aptitudes for work more important than relevant work experience, degree result and degree subject when hiring a graduate.
COURSE DETAILS
EXPAND A COURSE FOR MORE INFORMATION
This course is designed to provide an understanding of the importance of adaptability when dealing with intercultural communication in both the workplace and society. There will be a focus on the foundations of intercultural understanding and developing the individualās cultural fluency, as well as various case studies focusing on Greater China, Mexico and Vietnam.
By the end of this course, students will have achieved the following:
- Have created a written article examining the culture of a specific country
- Have self-assessed their knowledge of intercultural communication and how they can improve management of these
- Understand how to adapt this knowledge into the real working world through business-scenario case studies
This course aims to improve employability skills through self-awareness, skills awareness and enhancing career readiness. This course will equip the individual with the tools to identify their current skillset, understand those that need developing and transfer their skills to different job specifications using personal examples to showcase these. The aim of this course is to build confidence when applying for the next career step as well as provide a broader set of skills and attributes to ensure success throughout their working life.
By the end of this course, students will have achieved the following:
- Have an improved CV and understand how to tailor this to different applications
- Have created a basic template for a cover letter linked to their skillset and examples which can later be adapted
- Be more self-aware and understand the skills that need to be developed
This course introduces the fundamentals of digital networking, digital marketing, and digital presentations skills. This course will introduce LinkedIn features and making the most of the LinkedIn profile, key differences and benefits between a variety of social media platforms, basic knowledge of SEO and SEM and techniques to improve public speaking skills in a digital context.
By the end of this course, students will have achieved the following:
- Have an up-to-date LinkedIn profile and know how best to use this to their advantage
- Have learned the digital marketing basics and will be aware of how to adapt content and SEO techniques to specific goals
- Have mastered public speaking and digital presentations and will be aware of online resources that provide practice of these
This course is designed to equip all students and recent graduates with the basic skills needed when entering the workplace. There will be a large focus on understanding how to adapt from in-person to remote work in regards to productivity and time management, communication and the use of digital platforms. The course will also provide learners with the skills needed to identify their current skillset, recognise the skills they’re lacking, and provide actionable examples of how to improve these and meet employer’s demands.
By the end of this course, students will have achieved the following:
- Have recognised the best methods of creating an organised and creative environment to manage tasks and time efficiently using CRM software, scheduling and other methods.
- Have a clear understanding of how to communicate effectively within a professional team and have the basic skills to lead a digital meeting.
- Have identified their strengths and gained an understanding of how to exercise these to the best standard, as well as weaknesses and the most effective actions to improve on these.
CULTURAL MENTORS
A UNIQUE WAY TO SHARE CULTURES
You will be partnered with a Cultural Mentor who will help you to increase your cultural awareness.
- Youāll schedule one audio or video call each week and exchange common interests and areas of study.
- Pagoda will provide you with a theme (e.g. festivals/traditions, food, music/arts etc.) to discuss knowledge and experiences in relation to the home country culture.
- Youāll produce a weekly cultural blog sharing what you have learnt with inclusions of videos, pictures etc.
- Interact with your cultural mentor and intern community in online events and discussions.
