It’s me again. Missed me already?
My time in Zhuhai is flying by! Unbelievable! Just had my first weekend here.
I have to admit that I was a little lazy on Friday. I had a long Skype call with my parents, watched a movie and went to bed. But that was only to be up and awake on Saturday. Starting the day by having breakfast, doing the laundry and doing our nails. Jenny (my beloved flat mate and colleague) and I decided to clean the kitchen and prepare the freezer for the coming summer.
During these activities we got a message that there will be a burger-eating competition at London Lounge (a British bar really close to our flat and the beach).
We did not join in but we did enjoy a normal-sized burger with fries and fish & chips whilst observing the competition. They even had deep fried Snickers Bars. Those 1-kg burgers were so huge:
Having showered and with the plan to go to the bar street, we took the bus and met some of the interns at one of the bars there. Inside some guy was on stage singing Chinese songs. As it was really nice and warm weather on Saturday we sat outside. Some fires were burning and the trees were lighted. It was romantic.
Having drank a cocktail or two we went on our search for a nice Club (first night clubbing in Zhuhai for me). In the first club which we entered, I noticed that there were tables in the whole place. And the people who were standing around those tables were served by waiters. I don’t know about you but I never saw such a club before. Unfortunately all tables were taken so we went out again to search for another club.
In this club, it was the same situation as in the first, tables were everywhere but they had more space in between. When we came in, there was a Chinese guy singing and the whole club sang along from time to time. We tried to join in a little! Some minutes later the stage was open to jump on and dance. Which we did. Funny thing that you could see was that in the beginning there were only foreigners dancing. But later some Chinese dared to show their dancing skills and soon two of them asked us to join their table. They invited us for some Chinese wine and a Budweiser.
Being back on the dance floor it didn’t take long for a woman to invite us to her table. VIP this time. They had a huge bottle of cognac on their table and also Chinese wine. We were offered different fruits, snacks and green tea, too.
Also, I was presented with a really expensive bouquet by one Chinese guy. Awesome!
It was a really nice evening in which we made a lot of local friends. I am looking forward to our next night out.
See you and 再见，
Gianna aka Gini aka 吉娜。
P.S. Some of you might want to know what happened to my back after the cupping about which I told you in my last blog. Well, those circles act like normal bruises even though they are much bigger and unusually many. At the moment they have some green-yellowish color. My back still feels a little sore I have to admit…
Apply now for an internship and join us interns on a night out in Zhuhai!
Historically, Halloween is an American tradition, however it has now spread all over the world. People everywhere are dressed up as scary monsters and bloody bodies. Of course the amount of people that dress up depends on the country they live in. Here in China they don’t have a national holiday for Halloween, so when people celebrate it, they do so on the weekend and usually near places where a lot of westerners are.
In Zhuhai you could only find two places where they celebrated Halloween. One was a western bar, called London Lounge and the other was at the bar street here in Zhuhai. Nearly all InternChina Interns went to the London Lounge. Arriving at the London Lounge, a lot of people were dressed up – but mostly western people. Afterwards we headed to the second Halloween location – the bar street. All trees in the Street were full of bright pumpkins. Walking down the street of clubs, some of the Chinese people were surprised by our look. Two night clubs were decked out in scary decorations.
Some international schools in Zhuhai had Halloween parties as well, but just during the day and with a lot of small children. Not scary enough for real Halloween experts.
Preparation for Halloween wasn’t that easy in Zhuhai. The underground market seemed to have ignored Halloween and offered the same stuff as usual. Only in the western supermarket Carrefour, there was a small section of Halloween costumes and decorations. If you are well prepared – so think about what you want to wear well in advance – you could order some costumes on the internet. However face paint could be found everywhere and, together with a lot of creativity, we made up our own last-minute-Halloween costumes. The ghost was pretty much the easiest 🙂
At least we had a lot of fun, celebrating Halloween here in Zhuhai.
Apart from the great business and work opportunities that Zhuhai has to offer, it also has a great nightlife for those that like to have fun on their nights off.
There are many various places you can go to enjoy your Friday night, whether it be KTV, Bar Street (where all the clubs are) or the downtown bars.
KTV is a favorite amongst the Chinese locals, they absolutely love KTV’ing. KTV is actually so much fun, you get your own private room with a massive TV and sound system, and you can karaoke privately with your friends. If you don’t feel like singing, you’ve basically got yourself a private club for the night! Drinks tend to be expensive, but it all evens out because the price to rent the room for the night is very inexpensive. KTV’s can be found all over the city.
Bar Street is a favorite amongst the interns because there is a street full of bars and clubs. 88 Club in particular is the main club to go to when you are in Zhuhai. Opening, and happening every night of the week, you can always expect dance music, flashing lights, live dancers and free glow sticks. Because the drinks tend to be a little expensive, the interns usually buy drinks from the 7/11 down the street, drink them by the big lit-up tree outside of 88, and then enter the club when they are ready to party.
Right next to Bar Street is BBQ Street, where you can find lots of delicious street vendors ready to make you food at 2:00am when you’re drunk and hungry.
For those more relaxed nights, there are many great bars to go to. London Lounge, for example, which is located opposite the Jida beach, has become very popular. Sports games are played on the regular, and there is always great live music. If you’re craving western delights such as sausage rolls or fish’n’chips, this is the place to come to. If you’re a little tired of drinking Chinese beer and feel like a nice change, London Lounge serves Guinness, Tuborg, Carlsberg, Heineken, Corona’s, etc.
King’s Flanc is another hidden gem in Zhuhai. They offer a vast variety of wines and other drinks for those more classy nights.
