MORE ABOUT OUR MISSION

BUILD THE BIGGEST & MOST INCLUSIVE GLOBAL WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAMME

We have built Pagoda Projects from a small programme called InternChina in Qingdao into an award-winning global internship provider. Our ambition is to become the biggest there is, whilst remaining genuinely inclusive. Our participants in 2019 came from 52 countries. Since we founded the business, 27% of our participants from the UK, EU, North America or Australasia were non-white ethnicity and in 2019, 58% of our British participants were from a lower income background.

WORKING NO MORE THAN 4 DAYS PER WEEK

Our ambition is to be an organisation which works a 4-day week as standard, whilst offering competitive full-time pay and conditions. After doing a lot of reading and theorising over the years, we put this in writing in 2020 so that we can make tangible progress towards this goal.

HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT

In a sector which involves a lot of carbon emissions through international travel, we believe it’s our own responsibility to make a positive impact. Watch this space to track our progress towards this challenge.

MORE ABOUT OUR VALUES

CREATE ‘EVERYBODY WINS’ OUTCOMES

Abraham Lincoln once said “You can’t please all of the people all of the time”. In the context of our business, we aim to prove him wrong. We believe that every programme we organise should have a positive impact on those directly and indirectly involved. In most cases our programmes directly impact students or graduates, their university or training institution, the business in which they complete an internship and the Pagoda team. We also consider other broader stakeholders affected by our programmes, such as participants’ parents, local communities and the physical environment.

Three examples of this value in action:

We arrived in Zhuhai in 2011. Since then we have brought international talent to hundreds of local businesses, placed over 800 students onto internships and as founding members of CTC, we help bring together the local and international community in Zhuhai to sustain a worthy cause.

Our award-winning global internship programme with the University of Dundee. The university have seen significant return on investment due to the positive impact of internships on their taught postgraduate programmes. The students represent a broad range of nationalities and backgrounds. In 2019, 91% of participants felt that the programme enhanced their employment prospects and 97% improved their cultural fluency. 98% of participants would actively recommend our programme.

In November 2019 we launched an internship programme in Guangzhou, funded by one of China’s leading brands, Wang Lao Ji (王老吉). This ground-breaking programme brings together the internationalisation goals of the University of Auckland with the global ambitions of Wang Lao Ji. Our team played a critical role in organising the programme and supporting all stakeholders throughout.

DEVELOP POSITIVE INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS THROUGH THE EXCHANGE OF CULTURES, CUSTOMS & FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Our international team of dedicated people believe that learning languages and discovering other cultures makes the world a better place. We want to open up dialogues that will lead to new collaborations between countries in the future, collaborations that will benefit a wider variety of people and encourage growth and understanding.

Three examples of this value in action:

Our groundbreaking Cultural Mentor initiative.
Designed to match students from all over the world to expand their network and get immersed in cross-cultural communication.

Our internships in China as part of the British Council’s Generation UK campaign have encouraged positive social mobility and UK-China relations since 2013.

We have placed over 700 students and recent graduates into homestays in Mainland China since 2007

SUPPORT THE GROWTH, SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS OF OUR PARTICIPANTS AND OUR TEAM

We believe in the perfect balance of professionalism and fun. As our business has grown, we’ve worked hard to maintain the hard-working, informal and friendly atmosphere that we enjoyed as a startup.

Three examples of this value in action:

Team get-togethers: In 2019 we brought our global teams together in Vietnam and Manchester.

Feedback is mandatory! All participants must complete extensive feedback and our team complete weekly check-ins so that we can constantly improve their experience as a participant or employee.

Thursday Dinners. In every destination we are proud of our social programme. Often this revolves around a weekly dinner which brings our team together with participants in an informal setting.
